Grammar School (Grades K–6)

Classical Christian Elementary Education in Tehachapi, California

At Heritage Oak School, our Grammar School program (Kindergarten through 6th grade) provides a strong academic and spiritual foundation through a classical Christian education model designed to meet students at each stage of their development.

As a private K–12 Christian school in Tehachapi serving Kern County families, we equip students with the knowledge, habits, and character needed to succeed in later academic stages, including Logic School (middle school).

Rooted in the Classical Trivium (Grammar Stage) and taught through a biblical worldview, students grow both academically and spiritually under the guidance of dedicated Christian teachers.

Our approach combines:

  • Structured, mastery-based learning
  • Hands-on and discovery-based instruction
  • Memory work through songs, chants, and repetition
  • Development of strong study habits and classroom discipline
  • A joyful, engaging learning environment that fosters confidence and curiosity

This balanced approach allows students to flourish during their elementary years while building a lifelong love for learning.

Grammar School Course of Study (K–6)

The Grammar School Course of Study outlines our comprehensive K–6 curriculum, carefully designed to deliver academic excellence while engaging students through meaningful and enjoyable learning experiences.

Each subject is selected and taught to provide:

  • A strong foundation in reading, writing, grammar, and mathematics
  • Development of critical thinking and language skills
  • Exposure to history, science, and classical literature
  • Integration of biblical truth across all subjects

  • Music classes and foundational music education
  • Introduction to classical art and famous artists
  • Creative art projects and hands-on expression
  • Educational field trips that connect learning to real-world experiences

Student Support Services

Heritage Oak School also offers Student Support Services on a limited basis for qualifying students. These services provide additional academic assistance to help close learning gaps while allowing students to remain fully engaged in the classroom environment.

Reading Instruction

Reading is the hallmark of the Grammar School experience and a strong emphasis is given to phonics instruction, reading, narration and comprehension. Faculty members for grades K-2 are trained in the Brainspring Phonics First® Orton-Gillingham based phonics program which is fully accredited by the IDA (International Dyslexia Association) and IMSLEC (International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council). Teachers typically make reading a part of the nightly homework and parents are encouraged to read regularly to younger students.

Participation in our regular Read-A-Thons (held twice annually) are designed to encourage a love of reading, building reader fluency, and discovering different genres of literature.

Recommended Reading Lists are provided for parents and students to help select books for reading beyond the regular curriculum. Please check back regularly as these lists are periodically updated and expanded.

Reading List Guide for Parents

Homework Philosophy

When crafting our homework policy, we have taken into consideration the following:

all children need daily unstructured play time (even if it is only half an hour!)

many students participate in after school activities such as music lessons, sports, theater, etc.

children benefit from learning to contribute to the family through household chores
parents need time to lead their children in family worship and devotions each evening
Heritage Oak is not really a “worksheet” school and we don’t use a lot of workbooks
parents are not always confident they are teaching their child the “right way” that the teacher wants the assignment completed
our goal is that every student would become an avid reader and love good books
memory retrieval is a key component in learning that should be practiced daily

Based on these priorities and needs, our teachers assign homework according to the guidelines below:

Kindergarten – Grade 3

homework is only assigned Monday through Thursday nights
no more than 30-40 min. of homework
nightly reading assignments (15 min/night)
drilling math facts (5 min/night)
practicing memory work (10 min/night – can often be incorporated into family worship)t)

Grades 4 – 6

homework is only assigned Monday through Thursday nights
no more than 50-60 min. of homework
nightly reading assignments (25-30 min/night)
practicing math concepts as needed (15 min/night)
drilling math facts (5 min/night)
practicing memory work (10 min/night – can often be incorporated into family worship)
